ICU Joins Anti-Corruption Fight in Teso, Vows to Promote Cultural Integrity

By Teso Talents News Team

The Iteso Cultural Union (ICU) has pledged to take a proactive role in the fight against corruption, vowing to use traditional values and leadership to promote integrity and accountability across the Teso sub-region.

This move comes in response to the ongoing anti-corruption campaign led by the Inspectorate of Government (IG), which is currently engaging communities throughout the region.

Andrew Ocole, Prime Minister of the ICU, revealed that the union will spearhead efforts to sensitize the public through cultural channels and empower clan leaders with anti-corruption knowledge.

“As custodians of culture, we believe in upholding truth and accountability,” said Ocole.
“We are committed to working with our people to restore ethical leadership.”

Steven Ojaacor, Deputy Minister of Information at the ICU, echoed this commitment, stating that Iteso traditions naturally promote good governance.

“We must lead by example and ensure that our leaders are guided by these principles,” said Ojaacor.

Simon Okess, the ICU lands officer, also supported the initiative, emphasizing the importance of cultural institutions in reinforcing societal values.

The Inspectorate of Government has welcomed the collaboration. Christine Lamwaka, Manager of Advocacy and Capacity Building at the IG, described the ICU’s involvement as a significant boost to the national anti-corruption drive.

“Cultural institutions are vital allies in the anti-corruption fight,” said Lamwaka.
“We must use every available platform, including cultural ones, to influence change and promote accountability.”

Teddy Awor Chemutai, Head of the IG’s Soroti office, highlighted the importance of community involvement, noting that while the office is open to complaints, public reporting is still low.

“We encourage community members to speak up. Our doors are open to anyone with information,” she said.

The partnership between the government watchdog and the ICU marks a unique fusion of tradition and public policy, aiming to build a corruption-free Teso region rooted in cultural integrity and legal accountability.
