Kampala, Uganda – Moses Nsereko, a former candidate in the recent Kawempe North by-election, has officially announced his intention to contest for the presidency of the National Unity Platform (NUP), positioning himself as a challenger to the party’s current leader, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine.

Speaking in an interview with Sanyuka Television, Nsereko emphasized that leadership should be rotational and not permanent, asserting that he is ready to take on the mantle and secure the NUP flag for the 2026 general elections.
“Forty years of Museveni’s rule is enough. Leaders come and go. Our party’s ideology is centered on people power. My decision to run for the NUP presidency is not an issue because we live in a democracy, and it is ultimately the people who decide,” Nsereko said.
He added that his bid is not meant to divide the party but to exercise his democratic right within a people-centered movement.
“This is why I will contest against Kyagulanyi for the NUP presidency. If he wins, I will support him.”
Nsereko previously vied for the NUP ticket during the Kawempe North by-election but lost to Elias Nalukoola, who later won the seat. His subsequent decision to contest as an Independent drew backlash from party loyalists, who accused him of breaching internal regulations.
The NUP constitution bars members from running against official party flagbearers in any election.
Despite the fallout, Nsereko insists he remains a committed member of the party.
“I still have my NUP membership card. I understand my party better than you do,” he told the Sanyuka journalist, defending his continued affiliation with NUP.
Nsereko’s declaration has stirred debate within the party and the broader political landscape, as NUP prepares for the 2026 elections. It remains to be seen how the party leadership will respond to the challenge and whether an internal presidential race will be sanctioned.
