Ateker Development Foundation Launches Agricultural Project in Soroti District

Soroti, Uganda — The Ateker Development Foundation (ADEFO), in partnership with BMZ Germany, has officially launched its project activities aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture and strengthening value chains among smallholder farmers in Teso, Eastern Uganda.

The launch event, held at the Soroti District Hall on Friday, 30th January 2026, brought together district officials, Community Development Officers, private sector partners, and model farmers from sub-counties including Awaliwal and Ocokican.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Mosese Esatu, Principal Assistant Secretary, urged beneficiaries, particularly farmers, to take ownership of the project to ensure meaningful impact and successful outcomes.

The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Soroti, Mr. Mutai Victor, emphasized the need for participants to apply the knowledge gained during the launch. He highlighted the importance of post-harvest handling techniques to enhance productivity and achieve high-quality yields at the end of the planting season.

Mr. Richard, a staff member at Health Need Uganda, challenged political leaders in Soroti to invest in data collection, advocate for reforms and public welfare programs, mobilize support, and ensure accountability among farmers’ groups.

Peter Ebau, Local Council Three Chairperson for Awaliwal Sub-County, praised the district leadership for maintaining strong collaboration with SOCADIDO, noting that this partnership has consistently strengthened agricultural value chains, particularly among women farmers.

Farmers attending the launch expressed appreciation for the introduction of the second phase of the Mult-Actor Project (MAP), highlighting the timely support during a critical period for their farming activities.

Mr. Ben Boham Okiror, ADEFO Coordinator for the Teso sub-region, confirmed that the project will run until 31st October 2029. He emphasized that it aims to directly benefit 600 smallholder farmers, 60% of whom will be women, and reach at least 64,800 people across the region.

The project seeks to enhance agricultural productivity, support sustainable value chains, and empower farmers with knowledge, resources, and market linkages, contributing to long-term economic growth and community development in Eastern Uganda.
