Elderly in Pallisa Rejoice as SAGE Funds Bring Relief and Renewed Hope

By Alfred Opio

Elderly residents across Pallisa District are celebrating a renewed sense of relief and dignity after receiving their first Social Assistance Grant for Empowerment (SAGE) payments for 2026.

The beneficiaries, drawn from various sub-counties, each received UGX 75,000 covering the months of January, February, and March. For many, the funds have come at a critical time amid rising living costs and limited sources of income.

The SAGE programme, a government initiative, targets vulnerable elderly persons aged 80 years and above, providing them with financial support to meet basic needs and improve their quality of life.

Many beneficiaries expressed gratitude, noting that the money would help them purchase essential items such as food, medication, and clothing, while others plan to invest in small income-generating activities.

“We are very happy and thankful. At our age, it is not easy to work and earn. This support will help us take care of our families.”

Some beneficiaries also credited for spearheading the programme, saying it has restored hope among elderly citizens who often feel neglected.

“This programme shows that the President cares about us. We had been forgotten for a long time.”

Pallisa District SAGE focal person George Onyait confirmed that the disbursement process was successfully conducted and reiterated the government’s commitment to improving the programme.

He urged beneficiaries to use the funds responsibly, prioritizing essential needs that directly impact their well-being and that of their dependents.

However, leaders have raised concerns about possible misuse and exploitation of the funds. Pallisa District Gender-Based Violence Champion Stanislaus Omukude warned against any form of abuse targeting elderly beneficiaries.

“This money is meant for the welfare of the elderly. Any form of coercion, violence, or misuse will not be tolerated.”

He called on families and community leaders to respect the rights of the elderly and ensure they benefit fully from the programme. He also encouraged reporting of any cases of exploitation to authorities.

The SAGE programme continues to play a crucial role in improving the lives of older persons in Pallisa and across Uganda. Beyond financial support, it represents recognition, dignity, and inclusion for a group that has long faced social and economic challenges.

As discussions continue around increasing the grant amount and expanding coverage, many elderly residents remain hopeful that the initiative will grow stronger and continue transforming lives in their communities.
