NRM sweeps Soroti City Mayoral elections seats in landmark Elections

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has consolidated its political dominance in Soroti City after securing decisive victories in both division mayoral seats, effectively “painting the city yellow” in the just-concluded elections for division mayors and councillors.

The elections, held on Tuesday, marked a significant moment in Soroti City’s political landscape, with NRM candidates outperforming their rivals across the two administrative divisions—Soroti City East and Soroti City West.

In Soroti City East Division, NRM flag bearer Abdu Latif Wali emerged victorious after polling 1,003 votes, comfortably defeating six other candidates. His closest challenger, Solomon Epuru of the National Unity Platform (NUP), managed 217 votes, while the remaining candidates trailed further behind. The results reflected strong voter confidence in the NRM candidate and highlighted the party’s growing influence within the division.

Meanwhile, in Soroti City West Division, the NRM also registered a commanding win through John Enomu, who secured 7,899 votes. Enomu defeated Isaac Asaku of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), who garnered 3,874 votes in what was considered a closely watched contest. The West Division race attracted considerable attention due to its competitive nature and high voter turnout.

The official declaration of results was made by Luke Osele, the Assistant Returning Officer for Soroti City, shortly after the completion of vote tallying at the Electoral Commission (EC) offices in the city. Electoral officials described the process as orderly, with results reflecting the will of the electorate.

These victories build on the NRM’s earlier success in the city-wide mayoral race. Just a week prior, Francis Esudu Obonyo, also of the NRM, was declared the overall Soroti City Mayor after polling 11,504 votes. He defeated FDC’s Paul Omer, who obtained 8,274 votes in a tightly contested election. The cumulative results underline the NRM’s strong performance across all key mayoral positions in the city.

Following his declaration as Soroti City West Division Mayor, John Enomu pledged to prioritize urban cleanliness and improvement of road networks, emphasizing service delivery and inclusive development. He called for unity among residents and appealed for cooperation across political lines to advance the city’s growth agenda.

On his part, Abdu Latif Wali expressed gratitude to voters in Soroti City East for turning up in large numbers and for entrusting him with leadership. He reaffirmed his commitment to responsive governance, community engagement, and development-oriented leadership.

Political observers note that the outcome of the elections signals a shift in Soroti City’s political dynamics, positioning the NRM strongly ahead of future electoral contests. As the newly elected leaders prepare to assume office, residents will be watching closely to see how campaign promises translate into tangible improvements in service delivery and urban management.
