Residents in Akisim Sub County Clash Over Politics After Elections

By Alfred Opio

Tension has gripped residents of Pallisa District following reports of continued fights and hostility among community members over political differences arising from the recently concluded elections.

The concern was raised by John Julius Okaki, the Akisim District Councillor, who described the situation as alarming and warned that the growing divisions could undermine peace and development in the area.

Speaking to our reporter, Okaki said cases of residents quarrelling and fighting have increased, with some people refusing to greet or associate with their neighbours simply because they supported different political candidates.

“It is unfortunate that after politics, people continue quarrelling and fighting. This will only slow down service delivery and development in our area,” Okaki said.

He emphasized that elections are meant to choose leaders and that once the process is over, communities should unite and work together to support those elected into office.

According to Okaki, prolonged arguments and violent confrontations risk escalating into serious criminal offences, including loss of life. He urged residents to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could destabilize the community.

“Leadership comes from God, and we must respect those who have been elected. People should put aside political differences and focus on development,” he added.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Okello, the councillor for Okisiran Parish, confirmed that tensions are worsening in his jurisdiction. He revealed that some residents are being ambushed at night while returning home.

Okello cited a recent incident in which a resident was attacked and sustained serious injuries, including damage to one of his eyes.

“Politics is not a do-or-die affair. People should not fight or harm others because of political differences,” Okello emphasized.

However, some community members have blamed both elected and unsuccessful candidates for failing to guide their supporters after the elections.

Joseph Obilangole, a resident of Opadoi Village, argued that leaders have not done enough to promote reconciliation and peaceful coexistence.

“The community listens to their leaders. Peace cannot prevail if leaders remain silent while their supporters continue fighting,” he said.

Local leaders have since called for calm and urged residents to prioritize unity, dialogue, and development in order to restore harmony in Akisim Sub-county.

Authorities continue to encourage the public to resolve disputes peacefully and report any acts of violence to relevant security agencies.
