SOROTI — Business operators in Soroti City have been warned against poor garbage management practices, with authorities urging them to take responsibility for maintaining cleanliness in their premises.
The warning was issued by Clare Ayipo, the Deputy Resident City Commissioner for Soroti City East Division, who noted that many businesses are deliberately mishandling waste, contributing to unsanitary conditions across the city.
Ayipo said improper disposal of garbage has led to the blockage of drainage channels and service lines, increasing the risk of flooding, especially during the rainy season.
“We have observed that many business operators are not managing their waste properly. Drainage systems are being blocked by garbage and sand, which will definitely cause floods when it rains,” she said.
She revealed that city authorities have already engaged the German government for support in improving waste management systems, a move aimed at addressing the growing garbage crisis in the city.
Ayipo further called on city leaders to strengthen enforcement of existing sanitation laws to prevent potential health risks associated with poor hygiene.
Soroti City East Division Mayor Paul Omer urged business operators to fulfill their civic duties, including paying taxes, which he said are essential for effective service delivery such as garbage collection.
“Business communities must play their part by paying taxes so that the city can manage waste effectively,” Omer said.
Meanwhile, Soroti City Mayor Joshua Edogu attributed the problem of poor garbage management to negative attitudes among some residents and business operators.
He emphasized the need for individuals to take personal responsibility for proper waste disposal.
“It is the responsibility of every business operator to use garbage bins correctly so that city authorities can collect waste efficiently,” Edogu noted.
City leaders say improving sanitation requires collective effort, with both authorities and the public working together to maintain a clean and healthy urban environment.
