SOROTI — The Security Committee in Soroti City has resolved to arrest groups of youth found gathering late at night as part of intensified efforts to curb rising crime in the city.
Resident City Commissioner (RCC) John Michael Okurut said security agencies have observed an increase in youth involvement in criminal activities, which he attributed to peer group influence and idleness.
“It has been noticed that many youth have deliberately involved themselves in peer groups, and this has contributed to the increasing crime rates in the city,” Okurut said.
He revealed that security authorities have launched daily night patrols across Soroti City to restore order and address growing insecurity concerns.
“As the security department, we have intensified night patrols throughout the city to fight crime and improve public safety,” he explained.
According to Okurut, reports from security agencies indicate that many of the crimes reported in the city are allegedly committed by youth groups.
“The majority of crimes across the city are being conducted by youth, and this has become a major security threat,” he added.
The RCC called upon residents to cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious individuals and criminal activities to police.
“We encourage the public to work closely with authorities and report suspected criminals for quick action,” Okurut urged.
Paul Opige, the LC1 Chairperson of Wire Cell in Soroti City West Division, supported the move and emphasized the need for stronger community engagement in addressing insecurity.
“There is a need for communities to come together and discuss possible ways of preventing insecurity,” Opige said.
He also blamed increasing theft in the city on youth who have failed to engage in productive activities.
“Most of the thefts happening across the city are committed by idle youth who refuse to involve themselves in meaningful work,” he noted.
Meanwhile, some residents expressed fear following recent killings by unknown assailants in different parts of Soroti City.
Community members have called for stronger cooperation among security agencies and local leaders to restore peace and protect residents.
Security authorities have assured the public that operations and patrols will continue as part of efforts to reduce crime and improve safety across the city.
