South Kyoga Police to Intensify Community Policing Amid Post-Election Violence

By Vicent Emong

South Kyoga, Uganda — Police in the South Kyoga Region have announced plans to intensify community policing efforts following incidents of violence linked to recent election outcomes.

The move aims to restore calm, promote reconciliation among residents, and prevent further unrest across the region.

ASP Stephen Mukombe, the South Kyoga Regional Community Liaison Officer and Police Spokesperson, said the force will increase its presence and engagement with communities to foster peace and stability.

“We are appealing to the people of South Kyoga Region to return to their normal activities. Elections are over, and it is now time to focus on development,” Mukombe said.

He urged parents to take children back to school and emphasized that police will step up sensitization campaigns to reach all corners of the region.

Mukombe noted that the intensified community policing strategy will include increased visibility of officers, community meetings, radio and television talk shows, and regular public sensitization programs to ensure no one is left out.

“We are doubling our community policing through visibility, sensitization, and community engagements to promote harmony and security,” he explained.

The renewed efforts follow recent incidents of election-related violence, including the killing of the NRM Chairperson for Aligoi Sub-county, Samson Wamimbi, which has heightened tensions in the area.

Police say the strategy also seeks to reconcile supporters of different political candidates, both winners and losers, to prevent further conflict.

Mukombe warned residents against taking the law into their own hands and encouraged them to use established government and legal structures to resolve disputes.

“We urge the public to report grievances to the nearest police post or station instead of engaging in violence. Anyone involved in criminal acts will be arrested and prosecuted,” he said.

Authorities remain hopeful that strengthened cooperation between police and communities will help restore peace and ensure a stable environment for development in the South Kyoga Region.
