Mbale City has taken a major step toward socio-economic transformation following the official launch of a regional office by Uganda Development Bank (UDB), a move expected to unlock investment opportunities and accelerate growth across Eastern Uganda.
The new office brings financial services closer to businesses, farmers, and entrepreneurs who have long struggled with limited access to affordable credit and technical support. Leaders and stakeholders have described the development as a game changer for the region’s economy.
Speaking at the launch, Uganda Development Bank Managing Director Patricia Ojangole said the expansion will enhance the bank’s ability to support both financial and non-financial needs of the private sector.

She noted that Eastern Uganda holds immense potential, particularly in agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, and technology, adding that UDB will prioritize investments that drive sustainable economic growth.

The bank’s focus areas include agro-industrialization, manufacturing, knowledge-based industries, tourism, infrastructure, and education. It will also support improvements in transport networks to enhance connectivity and ease movement of goods.
Local leaders welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that it will address long-standing financial challenges in the region.
Mbale District LC5 Chairperson Mohammadi Mafabi described the launch as a milestone for Eastern Uganda, noting that agriculture remains the backbone of the region’s economy, with coffee as the main cash crop.
❝ “This is a significant milestone for Mbale and the entire Eastern region. Our farmers have faced challenges due to limited access to modern processing facilities.” ❞
— Mohammadi Mafabi
He explained that inadequate processing infrastructure has affected the quality and value of agricultural produce, particularly coffee, which is often sold in low-value or semi-processed form.
Mafabi expressed confidence that access to UDB financing will enable farmers and agribusinesses to invest in modern equipment, expand operations, and improve productivity.
❝ “The availability of patient capital is critical. UDB offers long-term financing, giving businesses enough time to grow and stabilize.” ❞
— Mohammadi Mafabi
He also urged entrepreneurs to take advantage of the opportunity responsibly, emphasizing the importance of proper loan management and timely repayment to sustain the program.
Beyond financing, the bank will provide business advisory services and financial literacy training to help entrepreneurs improve management practices and increase profitability.
The launch is expected to have far-reaching economic benefits, including job creation, increased value addition, and enhanced competitiveness in key sectors such as agriculture and manufacturing.
As Mbale City continues to position itself as a commercial hub in Eastern Uganda, stakeholders believe the presence of Uganda Development Bank will play a crucial role in driving inclusive growth and unlocking the region’s economic potential.
With improved access to capital and strategic investment support, the region is now better placed to contribute meaningfully to Uganda’s national development agenda.
