KUMI — Police in Kumi District are investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of an 11-year-old boy along the Kumi–Pallisa road on Sunday afternoon.
According to Territorial Police at Kumi Central Police Station, the incident was registered under Traffic Accident Report (TAR) 066/2026 and occurred at around 12:30 p.m. at Aterai Cell in Kumi Municipality.
The deceased has been identified as Akol Paul, an 11-year-old resident of Aterai Cell.
Police said the accident involved a Toyota Harrier registration number UBF 877R, which was reportedly traveling from Pallisa towards Kumi Town at high speed.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the young boy was rolling his bicycle while attempting to cross the road when the speeding vehicle knocked him.
“The child died instantly at the scene,” police stated.
According to authorities, the driver allegedly fled immediately after the crash without stopping to assist the victim.
However, boda boda riders who witnessed the incident reportedly pursued the vehicle and later traced it in Kumi Town after it developed a deflated tyre.
Police officers later responded to the scene and transported the body of the deceased to Atutur Hospital pending postmortem examination.
The Toyota Harrier involved in the accident was impounded and is currently parked at Kumi Central Police Station as investigations continue.
South Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson ASP Stephen Mukombe urged motorists and all road users to exercise greater caution on the roads.
“We advise drivers and all road users to be conscious while using the roads and avoid over-speeding,” Mukombe said.
The tragic incident has once again raised concerns about reckless driving and road safety along major highways in the Teso sub-region.
Residents in the area have called for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations to reduce accidents and protect pedestrians, especially children.
