Authorities Warn Learners Against Carrying Knives to School as Police Call for Stronger Safety Measures

By Vicent Emong

Authorities in the South Kyoga region have issued a strong warning to learners against carrying knives and other sharp objects to school, cautioning that such behavior poses serious risks to safety and discipline within learning institutions.

Speaking to the media, ASP Stephen Mukombe, the South Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson, emphasized that a knife is a dangerous weapon and should never be found in the possession of students. He warned that any learner discovered carrying a knife to school would face immediate arrest and legal consequences.

“A knife is a weapon. Any student who carries a knife in their bag is putting the lives of others at risk,” ASP Mukombe said. “If we receive such information, we shall take action, and those involved will be arrested and taken through the court process.”

He noted that, so far, reports of knife-related incidents have only been confirmed in one school within the region, while other schools have not recorded similar cases.

However, he cautioned against complacency, urging all schools to remain alert and proactive in ensuring the safety of learners.

Mukombe further called on school administrators to take a more active role in monitoring students by regularly checking their bags and surroundings for any sharp or dangerous items.

He explained that such preventive measures are essential in avoiding injuries or violent incidents, especially in cases of disagreements among students or between learners and teachers.

The police spokesperson also encouraged schools to strengthen collaboration with security agencies, particularly through initiatives.

According to him, involving law enforcement in school activities helps learners better understand the law, the dangers of carrying weapons, and the penalties associated with such offenses.

“Schools should work closely with the police so that learners are educated about the law and understand the consequences of breaking it,” he said. “This cooperation will help create a safer learning environment for everyone.”

He reiterated that safety in schools is a shared responsibility involving teachers, parents, learners, and security agencies.

Mukombe urged all stakeholders to remain vigilant in order to protect children and maintain discipline in educational institutions across the region.
