KUMI — Police in Kumi District have launched investigations into a fatal road crash that left one person dead and two others injured along the busy Kumi–Mbale highway.
The accident occurred on April 27, 2026, at around 1:40 p.m. in Orapada Village, Kumi Municipality.
According to the South Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson, ASP Stephen Mukombe, the crash involved a Toyota Hilux, registration number U.G. 6939 M, and a motorcycle (boda boda), both traveling from Mbale towards Kumi.
Preliminary findings indicate that the motorcycle rider, who was carrying two passengers, suddenly turned to the right side of the road, leading to a collision with the vehicle.
An 82-year-old passenger identified as Sadoki died instantly at the scene, while the two other victims sustained injuries and were rushed to Atutur General Hospital for treatment.
The body of the deceased was also taken to the same facility for a postmortem examination.
Police suspect that reckless driving and over-speeding by both the motorcyclist and the vehicle driver may have contributed to the accident.
The driver of the motor vehicle reportedly fled the scene shortly after the crash. Authorities have since urged him to report to the nearest police station as investigations continue.
Police are also appealing to road users to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life on the roads.
