The driver of the vehicle, identified as Dr. Ichumar Simon, who served as the District Health Officer (DHO) for Katakwi, died instantly at the scene.
His death has sent shockwaves across the health sector and the wider community, where he was known for his service and leadership in public health.
Two other occupants who were traveling in the same vehicle sustained serious injuries during the crash. They were rushed to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention.
Police have since launched investigations to determine the exact cause of the accident, with authorities not ruling out factors such as road conditions, driver error, or mechanical failure.
The Soroti–Moroto Road, particularly sections around swampy areas like AkaiKai, has previously been flagged as a high-risk stretch, especially during night travel.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise extra caution when driving at night and along potentially hazardous sections of the road.
The incident adds to growing concerns over road safety in the region, with leaders calling for increased awareness and stricter adherence to traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life.
As investigations continue, the community mourns the loss of a key health official while hoping for the recovery of the injured victims.
