Kumi District Assistant RDC Calls for Peace and Unity After Elections

By Vicent Emong

The Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Kumi District, James Akodai, has called on residents and political leaders to embrace peace, unity, and harmony following the recently concluded general elections.

Speaking to the media, Akodai urged the community to move away from political divisions and camps that could spark tension and insecurity within the district.

He expressed concern that some candidates who lost the elections are allegedly fueling anger among their supporters instead of seeking lawful means to address their grievances.

“If you lost the elections, you know what to do — go to court and challenge the results. But influencing locals to become violent can cause insecurity in the district,” Akodai said.

The Assistant RDC encouraged residents to return to their normal routines and focus on productive activities such as business and agriculture rather than dwelling on election outcomes.

He further appealed to leaders to work together regardless of political affiliation, emphasizing that cooperation is essential for service delivery and development.

“Leaders should work together whether they won or lost elections, without segregation, in order to promote development in the areas they serve,” he added.

Akodai also urged those who were unsuccessful in the polls not to lose hope, noting that leadership opportunities would arise again in the future.

His remarks come amid lingering tensions in parts of Kumi, particularly in Kumi Municipality, where some supporters of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) have disputed parliamentary election results.

The NRM flag bearer, Richard Ochom, who lost the Member of Parliament race to independent candidate Silus Aogon, alleged that the polls were marred by vote rigging and intimidation. Some supporters also accused security personnel of interfering with the process.

District authorities have since maintained that elections were conducted peacefully and have urged residents to remain calm as any disputes are handled through legal channels.

Local leaders continue to emphasize reconciliation and cooperation as key pillars for maintaining stability and fostering development in the district.
