Kumi District has launched education infrastructure projects worth Shs826 million for the 2025/2026 financial year, targeting schools in poor condition as part of efforts to improve learning standards and the overall education environment.
The projects were officially unveiled by district leaders during site visits to selected beneficiary schools across Kumi County and Kanyum County, where authorities cited dilapidated structures, inadequate sanitation facilities and overcrowded classrooms as key challenges affecting learners.
District Chairperson (LCV) Nelson Elungat Lakol expressed gratitude to the Government of Uganda for releasing the funds to the education department ahead of the close of the current financial year in June 2026.
He said the district received Shs826,158,797 from the central government, which has already enabled the awarding of contracts to various service providers.
According to Elungat, the projects include construction of five-stance pit latrines, renovation of old classroom blocks and construction of new classrooms in several primary schools.
“These funds have come because of the district’s good performance. We have now handed over the sites to contractors so that work can begin immediately,” he said.
He called on parents and community members to support the initiatives by ensuring children attend school regularly and have basic necessities such as meals.
“The government cannot do everything alone. Parents must also play their role by supporting their children with lunch or porridge while at school,” Elungat noted.
The chairperson further tasked Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs), School Management Committees (SMCs), local council leaders and opinion leaders to closely monitor the projects to guarantee value for money and quality workmanship.
“We must ensure proper mixing of cement and sand and quality construction. As someone who fights corruption, I will not allow contractors to deliver substandard work. These structures are meant to serve our children for many years,” he emphasized.
Beyond the education sector, Elungat revealed that the district is also preparing to launch construction of maternity wards at Ogooma Health Centre II and Oseera Health Centre II.
He said the Ogooma facility will cost Shs380 million funded by the Ministry of Health, while the Oseera ward will cost Shs180 million under the Primary Health Care programme.
He encouraged local suppliers to prepare quality building materials to support the upcoming works.
“Those who have burnt bricks should get ready to supply good quality materials so we can construct strong and lasting buildings for our people,” he said.
District leaders expressed optimism that the new projects will ease congestion in schools and health facilities, ultimately improving service delivery and community welfare.
