MITOOMA — Police in Mitooma District are investigating a shocking case of alleged child abuse after a 45-year-old woman was accused of forcing her eight-year-old stepson to swallow dozens of sewing needles over a two-week period.

The suspect, identified as Juliet Tushabomwe, is currently in police custody as investigations continue into the disturbing incident that has left residents and child rights activists in shock.
According to preliminary reports, the boy was rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital after developing severe health complications linked to the ingestion of foreign metallic objects. Medical examinations later reportedly revealed that the child had swallowed a total of 46 sewing needles.
Doctors at the referral hospital immediately conducted surgery to remove the needles from the child’s body in a bid to save his life. Hospital sources indicate that the boy is currently recovering under close medical supervision, although his condition remains delicate.
Authorities say the alleged abuse is believed to have occurred gradually over a span of two weeks, during which the child reportedly endured intense pain and suffering.
Police in Mitooma confirmed the arrest of Tushabomwe and noted that statements have already been recorded from family members, neighbors, and medical personnel as part of ongoing investigations.
The motive behind the alleged act remains unclear, but investigators are working to establish the exact circumstances that led to the incident.
The case has sparked outrage among residents and child protection advocates, many of whom have called for swift justice and stronger measures to protect vulnerable children from abuse within homes.
Community members described the incident as horrifying and difficult to comprehend, with some questioning how the child endured the pain without immediate intervention.
Child rights activists have since urged parents, guardians, and communities to remain vigilant and report signs of abuse early before situations escalate into life-threatening incidents.
Medical experts warn that swallowing sharp metallic objects such as sewing needles can cause severe internal injuries, including damage to the digestive tract, bleeding, infections, and in extreme cases, death.
Police have appealed to the public to cooperate with investigators and avoid spreading unverified information as the case progresses.
Meanwhile, social workers and counselors are expected to provide psychosocial support to the young victim as he continues receiving treatment.
The incident has reignited concerns over child abuse and domestic violence in Uganda, with activists calling for increased awareness, stronger community monitoring systems, and tougher punishment for offenders.
Authorities say the suspect is expected to face charges related to child abuse and attempted murder once investigations are complete.
As the child fights for recovery, the case continues to draw national attention, with many Ugandans expressing hope that justice will be served and that stronger safeguards will be put in place to protect children from cruelty and neglect.
