Police in Pallisa District have launched investigations into a fatal incident in which a fisherman lost his life following a violent confrontation at Kawi Swamp.
The deceased has been identified as Simon Oonyu, also known as Obiro, a resident of Osekello Village in Apapa Parish, Olok Sub-county. The incident, which occurred on April 8, 2026, has sparked concern over rising conflicts among fishing communities in the area.
According to reports, the incident began when a group of fishermen from Olok Sub-county went out for routine fishing activities and encountered members of a Beach Management Unit (BMU) from Apopong Sub-county, allegedly led by a man identified as Okeleta.

During the altercation, Simon Oonyu was reportedly assaulted and thrown into the water by attackers. Fellow fishermen attempted to intervene, but he did not resurface, raising immediate alarm among his colleagues.
A case of assault was reported to authorities as search efforts for the missing fisherman commenced.
The following day, April 9, 2026, at around 4:00 PM, the body of the deceased was recovered from Kawi Swamp after a joint effort by local fishermen and residents.
Police officers, led by the Officer in Charge of Pallisa Police Station alongside CID detectives and Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO), visited the scene and documented evidence. The body was later taken to Pallisa General Hospital for a postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
By the time of filing this report, no arrests had been made. However, authorities have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and those responsible will be held accountable.
Bukedi North Region Police Spokesperson ASP Wilfred Kyempasa confirmed the incident and called for calm among residents.

Police have also called on fishermen and Beach Management Unit members to resolve disputes peacefully and adhere to fishing regulations to prevent further loss of life.
