Pallisa in Mourning as 18-Year-Old Fisherman Drowns in Lake Meito After Boat Capsizes

PALLISA — Grief has engulfed residents of Agurur Village in Amoni Parish, Obutete Sub-county after an 18-year-old fisherman drowned in Lake Meito following a boating accident caused by strong winds.

The deceased has been identified as Vincent Okuni, a resident of the area, who reportedly lost his life while carrying out fishing activities on the lake.

According to eyewitnesses and fellow fishermen, Okuni and a colleague had ventured onto the lake when strong winds suddenly swept across the water body, overturning their boat.

While his colleague managed to swim to safety, Okuni reportedly failed to survive because he could not swim.

The tragic incident has left family members, friends, and residents in shock as search teams continue efforts to retrieve his body from the lake.

By press time, local fishermen and community members were still combing the waters in search of the missing teenager.

Confirming the incident, Obutete Sub-county LC3 Chairperson Kenneth Mapera described the tragedy as devastating and said local authorities were informed immediately after the accident occurred.

“This incident has greatly affected the people of Obutete because we have lost a young energetic person. We appeal to all fishermen to always be careful whenever the winds become strong,” Mapera said.

He noted that drowning incidents have become increasingly common on the lake, particularly among fishermen who operate without adequate safety equipment.

Mapera urged fishermen to prioritize safety by wearing life jackets whenever they venture onto the water.

“Most fishermen do not have life jackets and this exposes them to high risks whenever accidents happen on the water. We urge them to invest in safety measures to avoid more deaths,” he added.

Residents who spoke following the incident expressed concern over the growing number of drowning cases in the area.

Some blamed negligence and failure to observe safety precautions, while others called on government authorities and development partners to support fishing communities with life-saving equipment and safety awareness programs.

Community members also described Vincent Okuni as a hardworking and determined young man whose life had been cut short at a tender age.

“This is a painful loss. He was still young and had a bright future ahead of him,” one resident said.

The tragedy has once again highlighted concerns over water transport and fishing safety in Pallisa District, with leaders urging communities to avoid fishing during dangerous weather conditions and to always observe recommended safety measures.

As search efforts continue, residents remain gathered at the lakeside hoping for the recovery of Okuni’s body so that the family can accord him a dignified burial.

The incident serves as another reminder of the dangers faced by fishermen operating on Uganda’s lakes without proper safety gear and emergency preparedness.
