Pallisa in Shock as 26-Year-Old Man Attempts Suicide, Sparks Mental Health Concerns

By Alfred Opio

PALLISA — Residents of Karieu Village in Nyakoi Parish, Kameke Sub County, Pallisa District, have been left in shock after a 26-year-old man allegedly attempted to take his own life by hanging himself inside his house.

The victim has been identified as Clement Ojulong, a resident of Karieu Village, who is currently admitted at Pallisa General Hospital in critical condition following the incident.

According to local authorities, the exact cause of the attempted suicide has not yet been established, leaving residents and leaders concerned about what could have pushed the young man into such an act.

Reports indicate that Ojulong allegedly locked himself inside his house before hanging himself using a rope. The incident was discovered when his wife returned home from fetching water and noticed something unusual inside the house.

Henry Omukule Odeke, the LC1 Chairperson of Karieu Village, confirmed the incident and said the victim was rescued by residents after his wife raised an alarm.

“The woman became suspicious after finding the house locked. When she checked, she saw her husband hanging inside and immediately called for help,” Odeke explained.

According to the LC1 chairperson, residents rushed to the scene, broke into the house, and cut the rope before rushing the victim to a nearby clinic at Osutuwa Trading Center for first aid.

“Due to his worsening condition, health workers later referred him to Pallisa General Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment,” Odeke added.

The incident has sparked fear and concern among residents, many of whom say the young man had not openly shown signs of emotional distress or serious personal struggles.

“This incident shocked many people because he had not openly shown signs that he was facing serious problems. Residents are now wondering whether he had family misunderstandings or mental health challenges,” Odeke said.

Community members who spoke after the incident expressed concern over the growing emotional and psychological pressures affecting many young people in society today.

Some residents noted that many people silently struggle with stress, unemployment, financial hardship, and family conflicts without seeking counseling or support.

James Okurut, the councilor-elect for Nyakoi area, condemned the act and urged residents to seek guidance and counseling whenever they face difficult situations in life.

“Suicide is not the right solution to challenges or disappointments in life. Everyone faces problems at some point, but it is important to seek advice and support from leaders, relatives, religious leaders, and trusted friends,” Okurut said.

He called upon community leaders to strengthen guidance and counseling services within villages so that people struggling with emotional or mental challenges can receive help before situations worsen.

Okurut also appealed to families to pay close attention to the emotional wellbeing and behavior of their relatives, saying early intervention can help save lives.

The incident has once again sparked discussions in Pallisa District about mental health awareness and the importance of openly addressing depression, stress, and emotional struggles, especially among young people.

By press time, medical personnel at Pallisa General Hospital had not yet released an official update on Ojulong’s condition, although local leaders said he remained in critical condition while receiving treatment.
