Pallisa MP Catherine Achola Urges Vigilance Against Ebola, Calls for Greater Uptake of Government Poverty Programs

By Alfred Opio

PALLISA — Pallisa District Woman Member of Parliament Catherine Achola has urged residents to remain vigilant against Ebola and actively participate in government poverty eradication programs aimed at improving household incomes and livelihoods.

Achola made the appeal while addressing mourners at Okudelia Cell, Hospital Ward in Pallisa Town Council during the burial of the late Stephen Okwana, a Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier.

Speaking to hundreds of mourners, the legislator emphasized the importance of observing Ebola prevention measures despite Pallisa District not having recorded any cases of the disease.

She warned that Ebola remains a national health threat and called on residents to strictly follow guidelines issued by health authorities to prevent potential outbreaks.

“Government and health experts have continuously sensitized the public on Ebola prevention. It is important that every resident follows these guidelines to protect themselves, their families, and the entire community,” Achola said.

The Woman MP encouraged residents to maintain proper hygiene practices, including regular handwashing with soap and clean water, avoiding unnecessary physical contact, and reporting any suspected cases to health officials immediately.

She also appealed to local leaders, religious leaders, and community mobilizers to intensify awareness campaigns and educate residents about Ebola symptoms and prevention measures.

According to Achola, community vigilance and early reporting remain key tools in preventing the spread of the deadly disease.

Beyond health concerns, the legislator urged residents to embrace government wealth creation and poverty alleviation initiatives designed to improve living standards.

She noted that despite the availability of several government empowerment programs, many households continue to struggle with poverty due to low participation and poor utilization of available opportunities.

Achola specifically encouraged residents to take advantage of initiatives such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga, and other government-supported programs aimed at boosting household incomes.

“Government programs are intended to uplift people from poverty. I encourage every eligible resident to take advantage of these opportunities and use the funds responsibly to improve their standards of living,” she said.

The MP further emphasized the importance of hard work, savings, and proper resource management as essential pillars for sustainable economic development.

She challenged young people to engage in productive activities and avoid overdependence on relatives and government support.

“Every individual must play a role in improving their livelihood. The opportunities are available, but people must be willing to utilize them effectively,” she added.

During the burial ceremony, mourners paid tribute to the late Stephen Okwana, describing him as a disciplined, hardworking, and patriotic soldier who served his country with dedication and commitment.

Family members, friends, and community leaders remembered him as a humble individual who promoted unity and community service throughout his life.

Several leaders who attended the ceremony echoed Achola’s message on Ebola prevention and encouraged residents to cooperate with health authorities in safeguarding communities against disease outbreaks.

As Uganda continues strengthening surveillance and preparedness efforts against Ebola, leaders in Pallisa have reiterated that prevention, vigilance, and public cooperation remain the most effective tools in protecting lives.

They also emphasized that active participation in government development programs can help families improve their economic wellbeing while building stronger and more resilient communities.
