PALLISA — Residents of Pallisa District have been urged to prioritize routine medical check-ups as a critical step in preventing and managing life-threatening diseases, particularly cancer.
The call was made by Hon Catherine Achola The Woman member of Parliament elect for Pallisa District while addressing mourners at the burial of the late Mariam Ikilai, a former female district councilor for Kibale Town Council and Kibale Sub-county.
Speaking during the burial at Opogono Cell, Achola emphasized the importance of proactive healthcare, warning that many people seek medical attention only when illnesses have already advanced.
“It is important for everyone to go for routine body check-ups even when they feel strong and healthy. Some diseases, especially cancer, develop quietly and only show signs when they are already advanced,” she said.
Achola noted that early detection significantly increases the chances of successful treatment, explaining that cancer can often be managed or even cured if identified in its early stages.
She also encouraged residents to adopt preventive health practices, including maintaining a balanced diet and engaging in regular physical exercise.
“Simple practices like eating well and staying active can go a long way in protecting our bodies from diseases,” she added.
In addition, Achola called on local leaders to intensify health sensitization campaigns through community meetings and public engagements to raise awareness about preventive healthcare.
The death of Mariam Ikilai has left the Kibale community in deep mourning, with leaders using the moment to reflect on the importance of taking health seriously.
Residents and stakeholders expressed hope that the message would inspire behavioral change and encourage more people to seek regular medical screenings.
As Pallisa continues to face growing health challenges, leaders believe that embracing routine check-ups and preventive measures will play a key role in improving public health and saving lives.
