Paul Eyabu Cautions Soroti City Youth Against Misusing Parish Development Model Funds

Youth in Soroti City have been urged to use funds under the Parish Development Model (PDM) wisely to improve their livelihoods instead of wasting the money on alcohol and drugs.

Speaking during the election of the Plascon Painters SACCO at the Plascon offices in Soroti City, Soroti City Commercial Officer Paul Eyabu cautioned beneficiaries against misusing the government empowerment funds, saying the program was designed to lift households out of poverty through productive investments.

Eyabu warned that some young people receive the money but end up spending it on alcohol consumption and other unproductive behaviors, which defeats the purpose of the initiative.

“Don’t receive this money and spend it on alcohol. Use it wisely to change your lives and escape from abject poverty,” he advised.

He further expressed concern over rising cases of drug abuse among the youth, particularly heavy drinking and marijuana smoking, noting that such habits drain energy and limit young people’s ability to focus on income-generating activities.

“Why waste all your energy on drinking instead of embracing government initiatives like PDM and Emyooga to transform your lives?” Eyabu added.

The commercial officer encouraged young people to form and join SACCOs to strengthen their access to affordable credit, savings opportunities, and financial literacy. He said organized groups stand a better chance of benefiting from government support programs and sustaining their businesses.

Local leaders at the meeting emphasized that the Parish Development Model aims to promote self-reliance, entrepreneurship, and household income growth. They noted that proper use of the funds could help youth start small enterprises, expand existing businesses, and create employment opportunities within the community.

Authorities in Soroti City continue to mobilize residents to embrace the program responsibly, stressing that misuse of the funds could undermine efforts to fight poverty and slow development in the region.

Officials have pledged to intensify sensitization campaigns to ensure beneficiaries understand the purpose of the initiative and use the resources productively.
