Police in Budaka District have launched investigations into a fatal hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of an unidentified male juvenile on the night of April 21, 2026.
The tragic incident occurred at approximately 9:15 PM in Kamonkoli Town Council along the busy Mbale–Tirinyi road, raising fresh concerns about road safety and driver accountability in the area.
According to preliminary police reports, the accident involved a motor vehicle bearing registration number UFS 512H. However, the vehicle and its driver remain at large following the incident.
Authorities say only the vehicle’s number plate was recovered at the scene, a key piece of evidence now expected to aid in tracking down the suspect.
The case was officially reported by AIP Topista Talunga, a police officer attached to Budaka Central Police Station (CPS). Following the report, a team of officers from Budaka CPS, together with personnel from Kamonkoli Police Station, promptly visited and documented the scene of the accident.
Although full details surrounding the circumstances of the crash are still unclear, police have confirmed that the victim was a juvenile pedestrian whose identity has yet to be established. The body was later conveyed to Mbale City Mortuary, where it awaits a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
The hit-and-run nature of the incident has drawn concern from both authorities and local residents, who have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of traffic laws along the Mbale–Tirinyi road. The road is known for heavy traffic flow, especially at night, and has previously been the site of several accidents.
Wilfred Kyempasa, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) for Bukedi North Region, confirmed that investigations are ongoing. He emphasized the police’s commitment to ensuring that the driver responsible is identified and brought to justice.
“We are actively following leads, and the recovered number plate will play a crucial role in our investigations. We urge anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the vehicle or driver to come forward and assist police,” ASP Kyempasa stated.
He further appealed to motorists to exercise caution while driving, particularly in populated areas and during nighttime hours when visibility is reduced. He also reminded drivers of their legal and moral obligation to stop and render assistance in the event of an accident.
As investigations continue, the community in Kamonkoli and surrounding areas remains shaken by the incident. Residents have called for improved street lighting, increased police patrols, and installation of speed control measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The identity of the deceased remains unknown, and police are urging members of the public with missing relatives to check with Mbale City Mortuary. Meanwhile, the hunt for the hit-and-run driver intensifies, as authorities work tirelessly to deliver justice for the young victim.
