SOROTI — Police in East Kyoga have launched investigations into an alleged attempted murder case involving a shooting incident that left two people injured in Soroti City.
The incident occurred on April 26, 2026, at around 10:20 a.m. in Agip Cell, Soroti East Division.
According to the Regional Police Commander, SP Ibrahim Saiga, the suspect has been identified as Olakitari Joseph, 32, a security guard attached to TAN International Company.
Preliminary findings indicate that the shooting followed a confrontation between the guard and Abudu Mwanika, a 50-year-old businessman and resident of Soroti City.
Saiga explained that Mwanika had gone to a Pepsi depot along Soroti–Mbale Road to retrieve a battery from his motor vehicle, which had earlier been impounded over an outstanding debt of about Shs 600,000.
“A disagreement arose between the two, and it is alleged that the victim advanced towards the guard while armed with a hammer,” Saiga said.
In response, the guard reportedly discharged one round from a pump-action rifle.
Mwanika sustained injuries to his left arm, while an 18-year-old bystander, Mary Atim, was struck by pellets on the upper back after being caught in the line of fire.
Police officers responded swiftly to the scene, arrested the suspect, and recovered the firearm, ammunition, and other exhibits.
Both victims were rushed for medical treatment and are currently receiving care.
The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police have urged members of the public to resolve disputes peacefully and avoid confrontations that may escalate into violence.
