Kalaki, Uganda — Kumam cultural dance groups in Kalaki District have received a boost after a United States-based well-wisher donated USD 100 to support the purchase of traditional dancing instruments aimed at promoting and preserving the Kumam cultural heritage.
The donation, made by Martha Hoy, is expected to strengthen performances by Kumam Cultural Heritage (KUCH) dance groups by enabling them to acquire essential instruments for traditional showcases.
The funds were handed over on February 6, 2026, to the KUCH Minister of Culture, Michael Engwaru, through Derby Cheryl, in the presence of His Royal Highness Won Ateker Me Kumam Raphael Otaya.
While receiving the contribution, Engwaru said the support would enhance cultural performances by various dance groups across Kalaki District and help sustain traditional practices.
“This support will go a long way in strengthening our cultural performances and easing the burden on the cultural ministry as we work to preserve our heritage,” Engwaru said.
He expressed gratitude to both the donor and Derby Cheryl for their commitment to promoting Kumam culture.
The donation was inspired by Cheryl’s visit to Kalaki District last year during a cultural event, where she was impressed by the vibrant and captivating Kumam dance performances. After sharing her experience on social media, Martha Hoy took interest and decided to contribute towards supporting the dancers.
Local cultural leaders say the contribution, though modest, is a significant step toward revitalizing traditional dance activities and encouraging young people to actively participate in preserving Kumam cultural identity.
They hope the gesture will inspire more partners and well-wishers to support cultural initiatives in the district.
