Rising Theft Cases Worry Opwateta Female Councilor

By Alfred Opio

Residents of Opwateta Sub County have been urged to remain vigilant following a rise in theft cases that has raised security concerns within the community.

The Female District Councilor representing the area, Filder Rose Oloit, said the increasing incidents of theft are creating fear among residents and threatening peace and development in the area.

Speaking in an interview with our reporter, Oloit revealed that the vice is being carried out by both underage children and adults.

According to her, several children in the area have reportedly been involved in stealing fruits from people’s gardens, including oranges, jackfruits, avocados and other fruit plants. She added that the minors also target household property such as utensils, clothes, hoes and other domestic items.

Oloit explained that most of the incidents occur on Sundays, when many residents have gone to church for prayers and leave their homes unattended.

She further noted that adults are also actively involved in theft, mainly targeting domestic animals and birds such as cows, goats, sheep, turkeys and chickens. According to her, the stolen animals are often transported using cars and motorcycles to unknown destinations.

The councilor also blamed some residents within the area for allegedly conniving with criminals from neighbouring communities to rob people’s homes.

Oloit warned that theft is a dangerous practice that undermines development and could lead to serious consequences for those involved.

She advised residents, particularly the youth, to engage in productive activities such as agriculture and small businesses in order to earn a living instead of resorting to crime.

In response to the rising insecurity, Oloit also issued a directive restricting motorcycle movements during late-night hours.

She warned that motorcycles operating beyond 10:00 p.m. without a clear and convincing reason will be arrested by authorities.

According to the councilor, motorcycles should only be allowed to move at night in emergency situations, such as transporting a sick person to a health facility.

She called upon the community to work closely with local leaders and security agencies to fight theft and restore safety in Opwateta Sub County.
