Samuel Kedi, the flag bearer of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), has been declared winner of the Butebo District LC5 chairperson by-election held yesterday, securing a decisive victory over three challengers in a peaceful poll.
The by-election was organized by the Electoral Commission of Uganda following the cancellation of the initial LC5 election conducted during last month’s general elections due to reported cases of vote rigging.
According to official results announced by District Returning Officer Betreace Apolot after tallying all declaration forms, Kedi garnered 18,866 votes, defeating his closest rival, independent candidate James Okurut, who secured 15,672 votes.
Other candidates trailed far behind, with independent Isaac Kibuge polling 153 votes, while Yasin Lubwa of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) received 70 votes.
Victory Speech
Speaking shortly after being declared winner, Kedi expressed gratitude to the electorate for the trust placed in him and pledged inclusive leadership.
“I thank the people of Butebo for being determined to choose good leaders. I promise to serve all people regardless of tribe or religion. That is the kind of leadership that will move our district forward,” Kedi said.
Rivals Accept Outcome
James Okurut conceded defeat and congratulated Kedi, thanking residents for the opportunity to serve them. He urged the new chairperson to prioritize the welfare of the people.
“I accept the results and thank the people of Butebo for giving me a chance to serve. I urge my brother Kedi to lead in the interests of the people,” Okurut stated.
Lubwa also accepted the outcome and called for unity and calm among residents following the closely watched contest.
Peaceful Process
The by-election was conducted under tight security and close supervision by the Electoral Commission, with voting described as orderly and peaceful across polling stations.
The fresh poll brings an end to weeks of uncertainty surrounding the district’s leadership and sets the stage for the incoming LC5 chairperson to begin implementing development priorities for Butebo residents.
Local leaders have since urged the community to rally behind the newly elected leadership to foster unity, stability, and progress in the district.
