Shock and Grief as Kibale Mourns Female District Councilor Mariam Ikilai.
By Alfred Opio.

Residents of Kibale Sub County and Kibale Town Council in Pallisa District are engulfed in deep sorrow following the sudden and mysterious death of former female district councilor, Hon. Mariam Ikilai.

Her passing has sent shockwaves across the district, with leaders and community members struggling to come to terms with the loss of a woman many describe as dedicated, vibrant, and selfless.

Hon. Ikilai reportedly passed away yesterday while being rushed for advanced medical attention. She initially fell ill and was taken to a health facility in Mbale before being referred to Kampala for further treatment.

Unfortunately, she did not survive the journey. Her death comes after what has been described as a short illness, though reports indicate that she had been battling breast cancer, a condition that may have contributed to her deteriorating health. However, the exact cause of her death remains uncertain.

Hon. Ikilai served as a female district councilor from 2021 until the end of her term, during which she earned respect across political and social divides. Her leadership style, characterized by humility, discipline, and commitment to service, made her a beloved figure in Kibale and beyond. Although she was voted out in the most recent elections, many still regarded her as an influential voice and a pillar of the community.

Clement Opakasi, the district councilor representing Kibale Sub County, confirmed the tragic news and expressed the collective grief of the district leadership. He noted that the loss of Hon. Ikilai has left not only Kibale but the entire district in disbelief.

“This is a very painful moment for us as leaders and as a community. The demise of Hon. Ikilai has left everyone in total shock. She was a committed leader whose contribution will be greatly missed,” Opakasi said.

Fellow councilors described the late Ikilai as a hardworking and principled leader who maintained strong relationships within the district council.

Patrick Osako, a district councilor representing Bolliso I Sub County, praised her character and leadership qualities.

“She was a good leader with great discipline. Hon. Ikilai was loyal and a friend to every councilor in the August House. She believed in teamwork and always stood for what was right,” Osako remarked.

Similarly, Justine Onyait, the district councilor for Obutete Sub County, expressed deep sadness over the loss, emphasizing that Hon. Ikilai’s potential extended far beyond her previous role.

“This is a big loss to the council and the entire district. She was a very capable and vibrant leader. Given her dedication and strength, she had the potential to represent the women of Pallisa at a higher level, even in the Parliament of Uganda,” Onyait said.

Beyond her political role, Hon. Ikilai was known for her close connection with the grassroots. Community members remember her as approachable and responsive, often engaging directly with residents to understand their challenges and advocate for solutions. Her efforts in championing women’s participation in leadership and addressing local development issues left a lasting impact.

As news of her passing spreads, an atmosphere of mourning has enveloped Kibale, with many describing her death as both sudden and devastating. Leaders have called for unity and support for her family during this difficult time.

Hon. Mariam Ikilai is expected to be laid to rest tomorrow at her ancestral home in Opogono Cell, Kibale Town Council since she is a Muslim. Preparations for her burial are underway, with community members, leaders, and well-wishers expected to attend and pay their final respects.

Her death marks the end of a life devoted to public service, but her legacy of leadership, resilience, and compassion will continue to inspire mrany in Pallisa District and beyond.
