Shock as Man Allegedly Hangs Self Over Domestic Wrangles in Pallisa District

By Alfred Opio

Residents of Otelepai 1 Cell in Kibale Town Council, Pallisa District, have been left in shock following the suspected suicide of a 30-year-old man after a domestic misunderstanding with his estranged wife.

The deceased has been identified as Peter Omoda, a well-known football referee in the area who recently officiated matches during the President’s Tournament.

His death has cast a dark cloud over the community, with many describing him as an active and respected youth.

It is alleged that Omoda took his life after his in-laws reportedly declined to allow him to reconcile with his wife, who had separated from him following prolonged family disagreements.

Sources say that after returning from his in-laws’ home, Omoda contacted his relatives in Ngora District and reportedly told them they would not see him again — a statement that later raised alarm.

Family members further revealed that he gave money to his children to shave their hair before he allegedly hanged himself inside his house.

The LC1 Chairperson of Otelepai Cell, John Simon Odele, confirmed the incident, saying the body was discovered by the deceased’s brother, identified only as Okwalinga. The brother reportedly grew suspicious and went to check on him after receiving calls from relatives in Ngora about Omoda’s worrying remarks.

“Omoda had previously attempted to take his life whenever he felt overwhelmed by disappointment. This is said to be the third attempt,” Odele noted.

Joseph Okoboi, the LC3 Chairperson of Kibale Town Council, described the incident as unfortunate, revealing that it is the second suicide-related case reported in the area since he assumed office.

He urged residents to seek support from leaders, friends, and family members when facing domestic challenges rather than resorting to self-harm.

“This should be a lesson to our people. Domestic wrangles can be resolved through dialogue and guidance from leaders. Ending one’s life is not a solution,” Okoboi emphasized.

The body was taken to Pallisa General Hospital for a postmortem examination as investigations continue.

The incident has left the community in mourning, with residents calling for increased sensitization on mental health awareness, counselling, and peaceful conflict resolution within families.
