Solar Lights Vandalized in Kumi Municipality as Authorities Launch Crackdown on Theft

By Vicent Emong

Authorities in Kumi District have raised alarm over a growing wave of vandalism and theft targeting solar street lights installed across Kumi Municipality, warning that the trend threatens public safety and undermines ongoing development efforts.

The solar lights, introduced to improve security, visibility, and night-time movement within the town, are reportedly being stolen or damaged by groups of suspected youths, leaving several areas in darkness.

Leaders Condemn Theft

Deputy Mayor Julius Okello condemned the acts, describing them as destructive and a setback to community progress.

“It’s troubling to see these acts of vandalism return. We are witnessing a pattern of theft that undermines our community’s development,” Okello said.

He noted that the problem is not new, adding that even previously installed solar lights funded by the municipality have been targeted.

“Many of the solar lights procured by the municipality have been stolen,” he said.

One of the latest incidents was reported along Ijala Road, where newly installed solar infrastructure was vandalized.

Security and Safety at Risk

According to municipal leaders, the lights were not merely for illumination but were intended to enhance public safety, deter crime, and support businesses operating at night.

“These lights were not just about lighting the streets; they were about creating a safer environment for everyone,” Okello explained.

Residents and traders who depend on the lighting for security now face increased vulnerability due to the destruction.

Night Patrols and Enforcement Measures

In response, the municipality has stepped up enforcement efforts, including plans for intensified night patrols to apprehend suspects.

“We will not tolerate such acts. We will be conducting night patrols to catch those responsible,” Okello stated firmly.

He added that authorities are considering stricter penalties and closer collaboration with security agencies to deter further vandalism.

Call for Community Support

Despite the challenges, Okello emphasized the need for unity and cooperation between leaders and residents to safeguard public property.

He called on local communities and business owners to take an active role in protecting shared infrastructure and reporting suspicious activity.

“Building trust and collaboration with the community will go a long way in ensuring that the lights remain in place and continue serving their purpose,” he said.

Development Requires Protection

The continued theft of public infrastructure highlights broader concerns about lawlessness and the sustainability of development projects in the municipality.

Local leaders stress that while government investments are critical, community ownership and responsibility are equally important to ensure long-term benefits.

As investigations continue, authorities remain hopeful that combined enforcement and community engagement will help restore order and protect vital infrastructure across the municipality.
