Crackdown on Poor Waste Disposal in Soroti City

Authorities in Soroti City have issued a strong warning to residents against dumping waste in drainage systems, citing growing concerns over flooding, pollution, and public health risks.

The warning comes amid increasing cases of blocked drains across several neighborhoods, particularly in densely populated areas.

Residents Blamed for Blocked Drainage

Soroti City Council Speaker, Juliet Agonyo, attributed the clogging of drainage systems to poor waste disposal practices by residents.

She noted that many community members continue to dump garbage directly into stormwater channels and open drains.

“In many neighborhoods, residents throw waste into drainage channels, which ends up blocking water flow,” she said.

According to Agonyo, the accumulation of waste obstructs drainage systems, causing water to backflow into streets and homes—especially during periods of heavy rainfall.

Authorities Threaten Legal Action

The Deputy Resident City Commissioner for Soroti City East Division, Clare Eyipu, emphasized that authorities will take firm action against offenders.

“We will take decisive legal action against anyone who dumps waste and blocks drainage channels because such actions endanger property and infrastructure, especially during floods,” she warned.

Health and Environmental Risks

Eyipu further highlighted that indiscriminate waste disposal not only contributes to flooding but also poses serious health and environmental risks.

Blocked drainage systems can lead to the spread of diseases, increased pollution, and damage to critical infrastructure.

Call for Responsible Community Action

City leaders are now urging residents to adopt proper waste management practices and work collectively to keep drainage systems clear.

The authorities stress that maintaining clean drainage channels is essential for preventing floods, protecting homes, and safeguarding public health—particularly during the rainy seasons.

Looking Ahead

With enforcement measures expected to intensify, Soroti City authorities hope that increased awareness and community cooperation will help curb the vice and promote a cleaner, safer urban environment.
