Teachers in Pallisa Under Scrutiny as Learners Allegedly Fund Alcohol Habits

By Alfred Opio

Education authorities in Pallisa District are raising alarm over troubling reports that some learners are allegedly contributing money or purchasing alcohol for their teachers—a practice that has sparked concern over professionalism and discipline in schools.

The issue was highlighted by Pallisa District Principal Assistant Secretary, John Okia, who described the trend as a serious ethical breach that undermines the integrity of the education system.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting, Okia warned that such behavior reflects a growing moral crisis within some schools and threatens the foundational relationship between teachers and learners.

“This is not only a violation of professional conduct but also a betrayal of trust. Teachers are meant to guide and mentor learners, not expose them to harmful habits.”

He emphasized that involving learners in such activities could have lasting psychological and behavioral consequences, potentially normalizing alcohol consumption among young people.

“When such behavior is normalized, we risk raising a generation that lacks discipline and respect for authority.”

The revelations have triggered mixed reactions within the teaching community. While some educators strongly condemned the alleged conduct, others cautioned against generalizing the issue.

One teacher, speaking anonymously, acknowledged that although isolated cases may exist, the majority of teachers remain committed to their professional responsibilities.

“It is wrong for any teacher to engage in such conduct, but we must avoid painting the entire profession with the same brush.”

However, other teachers admitted that the problem could be linked to broader challenges such as low pay, stress, and limited supervision in some schools.

“Some teachers are under pressure due to financial and personal challenges. While it does not justify the behavior, it shows the need for better support systems.”

Parents and education stakeholders have also expressed concern, calling for stricter disciplinary measures and increased oversight by school management committees to protect learners.

Local leaders have urged school administrations to strengthen internal policies and promote ethical conduct among staff. They also recommended regular sensitization programs to reinforce professional standards and accountability.

Okia called for immediate action, including investigations into reported cases and enforcement of disciplinary measures against those found guilty. He also encouraged learners to report inappropriate behavior through official channels.

“We must restore dignity and respect in our schools. The future of our children depends on the integrity of those entrusted with their education.”
John Okia

The issue has ignited a wider conversation about professionalism, accountability, and the challenges facing the education sector. While most teachers continue to uphold high standards, stakeholders agree that addressing such misconduct is essential to safeguarding the learning environment and maintaining public trust in the education system.
