Tragedy in Butebo as 45-Year-Old Peasant Dies by Suicide Over Burial Dispute

By Alfred Opio

A 45-year-old man in Butebo District has died by suicide following an alleged dispute with relatives who reportedly demanded Shs3 million as burial compensation for his late grandson.

The deceased, identified as James Kadiba, a peasant and resident of Amusala Village in Akisim Parish, Kanyum Sub-county, is said to have taken his life on Tuesday night after a tense confrontation during a family vigil.

According to preliminary police reports, relatives of Florence Mugala, Kadiba’s daughter-in-law, had gathered at his home following the death of her one-month-old child, John Ojangole. During the vigil, the relatives allegedly demanded Shs3 million from Kadiba to cater for burial-related expenses and reportedly threatened him when he failed to commit to the payment.

Family members say Kadiba appeared distressed after the confrontation. He later excused himself from the gathering and went into his house, claiming he needed to rest.

His wife, Christine Titipu, became concerned when he failed to return. After several unanswered calls, their son, Denis Kibale, forced the door open and found Kadiba hanging inside the house.

The incident was reported to authorities by Gilbert Omugit, the Butebo District Speaker and a resident of the area.

Police from the Bukedi North Region responded to the scene, cordoned off the home and conducted preliminary investigations. Regional Police Spokesperson Wilfred Kyempasa confirmed that a case of suspected suicide has been opened and inquiries are ongoing.

“We have documented the scene and investigations are underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident,” Kyempasa said.

The body was later taken for postmortem examination as part of standard procedure.

Local leaders and community members have since expressed concern over rising family disputes linked to financial pressures during funerals. Authorities are urging residents to resolve conflicts through dialogue, mediation by elders and local leaders, and lawful channels rather than confrontations that could escalate into tragedy.

Community advocates have also emphasized the need for counseling and psychosocial support for families facing emotional and financial distress, warning that excessive demands during bereavement can worsen already fragile situations.

The incident has left residents of Amusala Village in shock, with many calling for stronger awareness on peaceful conflict resolution and mental health support within families.
