VP Alupo Passes Out Over 1,200 Prison Officers, Urges Discipline and Responsible Living

Vice President has presided over the graduation of 1,238 prison officers, urging them to uphold discipline, professionalism, and responsible lifestyles as they begin their service in the Uganda Prisons Service.

The officers completed a nine-month Basic Recruit Warders and Wardresses training program, with 912 males and 326 females successfully passing out. The new recruits are expected to strengthen staffing levels and enhance the capacity of the Uganda Prisons Service in delivering its mandate.

Representing President , Alupo commended the recruits for choosing to serve their country at a young age, describing their role as noble and critical to national development.

“I welcome you to a noble and respectable service anchored on discipline, professionalism, and patriotic service to your country,” she said.

She emphasized that as members of the security forces, the officers have a duty to maintain peace, stability, and contribute to socio-economic transformation.

Alupo urged the graduates to lead disciplined lives by avoiding alcohol abuse, promiscuity, and laziness, warning that such behaviors could compromise their health and performance.

“If you know that your family and your country depend on you, you cannot handle your life recklessly,” she said.

She further cautioned that unhealthy lifestyles could expose officers to diseases such as HIV/AIDS and reduce their ability to serve effectively. She encouraged them to prioritize physical fitness through regular exercise and sports.

“You need your body, mind, and spirit to be in top condition to serve your country and contribute to Africa’s development,” she added.

The Vice President also reflected on Uganda’s history, noting that instability between 1962 and 1986 hindered the development of strong institutions, but credited the NRM government for restoring peace and unity.

Minister of Internal Affairs said the pass-out reflects the Uganda Prisons Service’s commitment to human resource development and building a professional workforce.

Meanwhile, Commissioner General noted that the recruits underwent comprehensive training focused on discipline, integrity, and respect for human rights.

Acting Commandant Mary Centenary added that the institution continues to invest in training as a key pillar in strengthening service delivery.

With the addition of the new officers, authorities expressed confidence that the Uganda Prisons Service will enhance its ability to provide safe, secure, and humane detention, as well as effective rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders into society.
