SERERE — Police in Serere District have launched investigations into a suspected murder after a 19-year-old student was fatally stabbed on Saturday evening.

The incident occurred at around 7:30 p.m. in Ocaapa Central Ward, Ocaapa Town Council, according to South Kyoga Regional Police.

The deceased has been identified as Acam Miriam, a student of Serere Senior Secondary School. The prime suspect, Otim Julius Lazarus, 23, a resident of the same area, is currently under police guard at a health facility where he is receiving treatment for injuries.

Confirming the incident, Regional Police Spokesperson ASP Stephen Mukombe said the case has been officially registered at Serere Police Station.

“We have a case of suspected murder by stabbing which occurred in Ocaapa Central Ward. Investigations are ongoing,” Mukombe said.

Preliminary findings indicate that the deceased and the suspect were reportedly in a relationship and had been seen together in the suspect’s room at around 7:00 p.m. shortly before the incident.

“It is alleged that they were together in the room, and shortly after, neighbors heard an alarm,” Mukombe added.

Residents who responded to the distress call reportedly found the victim collapsing at the doorway. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police officers later visited and secured the scene under the command of the Serere District Police Commander. A knife believed to have been used in the attack was recovered as key evidence.

“The suspect, who also sustained injuries, is currently receiving treatment under police guard. We shall record his statement once he stabilizes,” Mukombe said.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

The tragic killing has shocked residents of Ocaapa Town Council, with police urging the public to resolve disputes peacefully and report early signs of domestic conflict to prevent similar incidents.
