Residents Urged to Maintain Peace and Security, As Festivities Approach

As the Christmas festive season draws near, His Royal Highness Won Ateker Me Kumam Papa Raphael Otaya has called upon residents, particularly the Kumam-speaking community and the general public, to remain calm and uphold peace and security during the celebrations.

The cultural leader made the appeal in response to the heightened risk of insecurity that often characterizes festive periods, when some individuals take advantage of the joyful atmosphere to engage in criminal and antisocial activities. He emphasized that maintaining peace is a collective responsibility that begins with individuals and households.

Speaking in an interview with the media, Won Ateker Me Kumam Papa Raphael Otaya underscored the importance of vigilance and personal responsibility as communities prepare to celebrate Christmas. He noted that while the festive season is a time for joy, togetherness, and sharing, it is also a period that demands increased awareness to prevent incidents that may threaten lives and property.

“Security starts with each one of us,” Otaya said. “As we celebrate, we must remain alert and conscious of our surroundings. Peaceful celebrations are possible only when individuals take responsibility for their actions and look out for one another.”

The cultural leader drew special attention to the welfare of children, who are currently home for the holidays. He urged parents and guardians to take extra care in protecting children from potential dangers associated with the festive season. In particular, he emphasized the need to safeguard the girl child from abuse, exploitation, and neglect.

“With schools closed, children spend more time at home and in the community,” Otaya noted. “Parents and guardians must be present, attentive, and protective, ensuring that children are safe and guided during this period.”

Won Ateker Me Kumam Papa Raphael Otaya further stressed the importance of unity among citizens as a foundation for peace and national development. He encouraged residents to work together across communities, setting aside differences and focusing on shared values of harmony, respect, and mutual support.

According to the cultural leader, peace is a critical ingredient for development, and without security, meaningful progress cannot be achieved. He called on community members to collaborate with local leaders and security agencies by reporting suspicious activities and discouraging behaviors that could lead to conflict or crime.

He also cautioned against engaging in or tolerating activities that could escalate into serious crimes such as theft, assault, murder, rape, and other forms of violence. Otaya urged celebrants to exercise restraint, especially in the consumption of alcohol, and to resolve disputes peacefully.

“As we share meals, gifts, and moments with our loved ones, let us do so responsibly,” he said. “Celebrations should not turn into regret because of avoidable actions.”

In conclusion, Won Ateker Me Kumam Papa Raphael Otaya appealed to all citizens to embrace the true spirit of Christmas by promoting peace, protecting the vulnerable, and fostering unity. He expressed hope that through collective effort and vigilance, communities would enjoy a safe, peaceful, and joyful festive season that contributes positively to the well-being and development of the nation.
