Tragedy in Serere: Woman Found Dead Alone in House

By Vicent Emong

SERERE — Police in South Kyoga Region have launched investigations into the sudden death of a 56-year-old woman in Serere District, in a case that has raised concern among residents.

The deceased, identified as Perepetua Atim, was reportedly found unresponsive inside her house, prompting alarm among community members.

According to South Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson ASP Stephen Mukombe, the incident was initially reported at Kateta Police Station before being forwarded to Serere Central Police Station for further handling.

“It is alleged that the deceased was staying alone in her house. The matter was reported to police after she was found helpless, and by the time relatives arrived, she had already passed on,” Mukombe said.

Police confirmed that the body was taken for a postmortem examination, which established that the cause of death was suffocation.

The case has since been officially registered under reference number DEF 008/2026 as investigations continue to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

Mukombe used the opportunity to urge families to take better care of elderly relatives, warning against leaving them to live alone.

“We call upon elderly people not to stay alone but instead live with their children or relatives. Families should ensure proper care of their parents,” he advised.

The tragic incident has sparked concern within the community, highlighting the vulnerability of elderly individuals who live alone without adequate support.

Authorities have reassured the public that investigations are ongoing and have encouraged anyone with relevant information to cooperate with police.
