Agule Institute Hosts Eastern Region Sports, Showcasing Talent and Boosting Local Economy

By Alfred Opio

PALLISA — Agule Institute of Health Sciences and Management has come alive with excitement as it hosts the seventh edition of the Eastern Region games and sports competitions, drawing participants from across Eastern Uganda.

The event has brought together students, tutors, and sports enthusiasts in a vibrant display of talent, unity, and regional collaboration.

According to Michael Kwoba Allan, Chairperson of the Eastern Region Sports Committee for health training institutions, Agule was selected as host under a rotational system designed to give all institutions an equal opportunity to organize the annual games.

Kwoba revealed that eleven sporting disciplines are being contested, including athletics, football, netball, volleyball, rugby, woodball, tug of war, and indoor games such as ludo, scrabble, chess, and omweso.

“These competitions are not just for recreation but also help identify talent that will represent the region at national level,” he said.

He added that fifteen institutions from Sebei, Bugishu, and Bukedi sub-regions were expected to participate, noting that failure to attend attracts a penalty of Shs5 million payable to the Association of Principals of Health Training Institutions in Uganda (APHTU).

Agule County Member of Parliament and Executive Director of the institute, David Ochwa, welcomed participants and assured them of a well-organized event.

“We have prepared adequately with support from the community to ensure all activities run smoothly,” Ochwa said.

He noted that multiple venues have been secured, with Agule Primary School and Odusai Primary School hosting outdoor sports, while indoor games are taking place at the institute.

Ochwa highlighted the economic benefits of hosting the games, revealing that over 2,000 visitors are expected, creating opportunities for local businesses.

“These games will boost our local economy. People will need food, drinks, and accommodation, which will benefit our community,” he said.

He also reflected on the growth of the institute, which has expanded from 80 students in 2013 to over 1,000 currently, with plans to introduce diploma programs.

“As I prepare to leave Parliament, I am proud to have established something sustainable that will continue to serve our people,” he added.

Agule Town Council LC3 Chairperson Simon Okia praised the institute for putting the area on the map through hosting major events and attracting visitors.

“The presence of visitors is a blessing. Hotels, bars, and restaurants will all benefit,” he said.

Meanwhile, Serere District LC5 Chairperson Stephen Ochola called for unity in development, urging leaders to put aside political differences.

“Development should not be politicized. What matters is service to the people,” Ochola emphasized.

Participants have also commended the institute’s facilities, with David Baseke, a tutor from Mbale School of Hygiene, expressing surprise at its level of development.

“I expected a remote setup, but this is a well-organized and modern institution. It explains its strong performance,” he said.

As competitions continue, Agule Institute is emerging not only as a center for academic excellence but also as a hub for sports, regional integration, and community development.
