SERERE — Police in Serere District are investigating a case of murder by assault and malicious damage to property following a violent incident that left one person dead and several homes destroyed.
According to ASP Stephen Mukombe, the South Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, the case has been registered at Serere Central Police Station under CRB 240/2026.
The incident occurred on April 3, 2026, at around 7:00 p.m. in Opunoi Village, Opunoi Trading Centre, Labwor Sub-county in Serere District.
The deceased has been identified as Osega Francis, while the suspect, Okanya Anthony, 23, a resident of the same area, is currently in police custody.
Police say the deceased had gone to Opunoi Trading Centre when a fight broke out involving Acamer, Omiat, and Okanya Anthony. Osega reportedly intervened in an attempt to separate them.
In the process, Okanya allegedly picked up a stick and struck him on the right cheek, causing serious injuries.
The victim was rushed to Serere Health Centre IV for treatment but later succumbed to his injuries.
Following news of his death, relatives of the deceased reportedly carried out a revenge attack on the suspect’s family. Seven grass-thatched houses were burned, while two permanent houses belonging to the suspect’s father were vandalized.
“The suspect is currently detained at Serere CPS as investigations continue. We strongly warn the public against taking the law into their own hands,” Mukombe said.
The deceased’s body has been taken to the mortuary for a postmortem examination, and police have deployed in the area to maintain calm and prevent further violence.
Authorities are urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with police as investigations continue.
