Deadly Storm Kills Two, Destroys 200 Homes in Kibale Town Council

By Alfred Opio

The Office of the Resident District Commissioner has conducted an assessment visit to homes, schools, and institutions destroyed by the recent devastating storm that struck Kibale Town Council in Pallisa District, pledging swift government intervention for affected families.

The violent storm, accompanied by strong winds, hit the area earlier this week, leaving two juveniles dead, injuring more than 500 residents, and destroying over 200 houses along with several school structures.

The disaster also caused widespread destruction to crops and plantations, including cassava, bananas, and trees, dealing a heavy economic blow to households that depend largely on subsistence farming.

Speaking to journalists during the inspection, Resident District Commissioner Majid Dhikusooka expressed sympathy to the bereaved families and described the incident as one of the most severe natural disasters the area has experienced in recent years.

“I feel deep pity for the families that have lost their loved ones and property. This is a very serious disaster,” Dhikusooka said.

He revealed that his office has already contacted the Office of the Prime Minister to facilitate emergency relief and recovery support for all affected households.

The RDC further emphasized the importance of environmental conservation, particularly large-scale tree planting, noting that the flat terrain and lack of tree cover in many parts of the town worsened the impact of the strong winds.

“If trees were planted in these areas, the damage would not have been as severe,” he noted, urging communities to adopt preventive environmental measures.

Among those affected is Geoffrey Oduge, proprietor of Reverend Kajas Okurut Primary School in Ogasian Cell, whose newly constructed school buildings were badly damaged.

“I completed constructing the school in December last year, and it is unfortunate that such a disaster has now destroyed it,” Oduge said.

Meanwhile, Kibale County Member of Parliament-elect Constantine Okwi assured residents that authorities are documenting all affected families to ensure they receive government assistance.

He called for calm and solidarity among residents as they await relief support, saying unity and patience would help the community recover from the tragedy.

Authorities continue to assess the full scale of destruction as displaced families seek temporary shelter from neighbors and well-wishers.
