PALLISA — Residents of Gogonyo Sub-county in Pallisa District have received a major boost in security and community development following the donation of 200 solar lighting systems by local leader Ivan Omoding Koreta, popularly known as Rasta.
The donation, valued at approximately Shs60 million, is expected to transform trading centers and improve safety in areas that have long struggled with poor lighting.
The solar systems will be installed in key trading centers, along busy footpaths, and in other strategic locations to address persistent darkness that has hindered business and exposed residents to insecurity.
Speaking during the handover, Omoding said the initiative was inspired by the challenges faced by the community, especially limited lighting in public spaces.
“I realized that our people are living in darkness, and this has affected both their safety and livelihoods. I thought it wise to step in and provide a solution,” he said. “It is important to help where you can instead of watching people suffer when you have the means to make a difference.”
Omoding, who is also the district councilor-elect for Apopong Sub-county, noted that his support for the community predates his political career.
“This is not the first time I am helping the community. I have been doing this long before joining politics, and I will continue supporting our people in different ways,” he added.
Residents have welcomed the donation, describing it as a life-changing intervention that will improve both security and economic activity.
Patrick Osire, a resident of Gogonyo, praised the initiative, saying it would help businesses operate longer hours and reduce crime.
“This is something we have never seen before. Gogonyo has been in darkness for a long time, but now things are going to change,” he said.
Simon Obuge, another resident, called on other leaders to emulate the gesture, emphasizing the importance of lighting in rural areas.
“Security lights are very important. We thank Rasta for supporting the community. Other leaders should also prioritize the needs of the people,” he said.
Local leaders also commended the initiative, noting that solar lighting is both cost-effective and environmentally friendly, making it a sustainable solution for rural electrification.
As installation begins, residents remain optimistic that the project will enhance security, boost business activity, and improve the overall quality of life in Gogonyo Sub-county.
