Mothers Unite to Honor Christ at Mary’s Day Celebrations

By Vicent Emong

Mothers’ Union members from all twelve archdeaconries of Kumi Dioceses  joined the rest of the Anglican Communion in celebrating Mary’s Day, a significant occasion that honors the life and example of Mary, the mother of Jesus.

The celebrations began with a colorful procession at the diocesan offices, where women gathered in a spirit of thanksgiving, reflection, and renewed commitment to their faith. The day serves as a reminder of Mary’s virtues of humility, obedience, and unwavering trust in God, qualities that participants were encouraged to emulate in their daily lives.

Speaking during the event,Rose Abala , the Mothers’ Union Coordinator in Kumi Diocese, called on women to embrace their divine calling with dedication and faith.

“We are celebrating Mary not just as a historical figure, but as a living example of obedience, humility, and total surrender to God’s will. Every mother here is called to walk in that same path.”
Rose Abala

Participants also expressed appreciation to the Board of Mission for its continued support and leadership in strengthening the Mothers’ Union across the diocese.

Mary’s Day provided an opportunity for members to reaffirm their commitment to the five core pillars of the Mothers’ Union: upholding Christ’s teachings on marriage, raising children in the Christian faith, promoting fellowship through prayer and service, building stable family life, and supporting families facing challenges.

Abala emphasized the importance of putting these principles into practice.

“Our strength as Mothers’ Union lies in living out these pillars. It is not enough to know them—we must practice them in our homes, in our churches, and in our communities.”
Rose Abala

This year’s theme, drawn from the book of Ephesians 2:14–17, called on believers to anchor their lives in Christ as the foundation for unity, peace, and stability—an appeal that resonated strongly with the congregation.

“Christ is our peace. When we are rooted in Him, our families will stand firm, even in difficult times. Without Christ, the foundation becomes weak.”
Rose Abala

The celebration also paid tribute to Mary Sumner , the founder of the Mothers’ Union in England, whose vision continues to inspire generations of women around the world.

Drawing from scripture, Abala encouraged women to follow the example of biblical figures such as Deborah and the women who first witnessed the resurrection of Christ.

“God has always used women to fulfill His purpose.”
Rose Abala

The event concluded with renewed commitment among participants to strengthen their faith, uphold family values, and promote unity within their communities, as they continue to play a vital role in both the church and society.
