By Vicent Emong

A police officer has died after a speeding vehicle lost control and rammed into a police checkpoint in Katakwi District late Saturday night.

According to Haji Abraham Saiga, the Regional Police Spokesperson for East Kyoga, the fatal crash occurred on February 15, 2026, at around 10:00 p.m.

Saiga said a speeding Toyota vehicle, registration number UBR 15J, travelling from Soroti toward Moroto, first knocked down a roadside signpost before losing control.

The vehicle then rammed into a parked motorcycle, registration number UEM 232F (Bajaj Boxer), and subsequently struck Police Constable Okiror Enock (No. 78336), who was attached to the Teso policing sector.

The officer died instantly at the scene.

Another police officer sustained injuries during the crash and was rushed to Katakwi General Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

“The Uganda Police Force conveys its deepest condolences to the family, relatives, and colleagues of the deceased officer and wishes the injured officer a quick recovery,” Saiga said.

He urged motorists to observe traffic rules, reduce speed, and exercise extra caution, especially when approaching police checkpoints, to prevent similar tragedies.

Authorities have launched investigations into the incident.
