By Vicent Emong

Police in Kumi District are investigating a suspected murder case following a tragic domestic incident that left a 37-year-old man dead in Nyero Town Council.

The case, registered under reference DEF 07/2026 at Kumi Central Police Station, occurred in the early hours of April 6, 2026, in Obosoi Cell.

According to South Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson ASP Stephen Mukombe, the suspect has been identified as Apedel Samuel, a 74-year-old retired Inspector of Police and resident of the area.

Preliminary reports indicate that the incident stemmed from a family dispute involving the deceased, Odeke Julius. The disagreement reportedly began when Julius was asked by a family member to leave the house.

“The suspect entered the house after hearing a commotion and found his son inside. He ordered him to leave, but the situation escalated into a physical confrontation.”

Police say the situation turned violent when the deceased allegedly attacked his father, leading to a struggle between the two.

“In the course of the struggle, the two fell down and rolled on the ground before they were separated by another family member.”

The conflict was reportedly de-escalated after intervention by a relative identified as Adongo Jessica. However, hours later, the condition of Odeke Julius worsened.

He was rushed to Kumi Health Centre IV for medical attention but was pronounced dead at around 12:30 p.m.

Police have since arrested Apedel Samuel to assist with investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death.

The body of the deceased has been taken to Atutur Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected to determine the exact cause of death.

ASP Mukombe has called for calm among residents and urged anyone with relevant information to support ongoing investigations.

“We urge members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with police as we work to establish the facts and ensure justice is served.”
