Police Investigate Fatal Soroti–Lira Highway Crash That Killed Pedestrian

Police in Soroti City have launched investigations into a fatal road traffic accident that claimed the life of a pedestrian and left several others injured along the Soroti–Lira Highway.

The crash occurred on Sunday, May 11, 2026, at around 12:25 p.m. near Lale Road Junction.

According to East Kyoga Regional Police Commander Ibrahim Saiga, the accident involved a Sinotruck Howo trailer registration numbers UBS 411B/UBS 199H, a pedestrian, and two Bajaj Boxer motorcycles registration numbers UGG 732Y and UDR 059B.

Preliminary police findings indicate that the rider of motorcycle registration number UGG 732Y attempted to branch off before reaching the junction and collided with motorcycle registration number UDR 059B, which was approaching from the opposite direction.

“The impact caused the second motorcycle to lose control and ram into the trailer ahead, resulting in the crash,” Saiga explained.

During the accident, a pedestrian identified as Agato Ester, 30, was struck and died instantly at the scene.

Other victims, including riders and passengers on the motorcycles, sustained minor injuries and were rushed to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital for medical treatment.

Police officers later visited and documented the scene, recorded witness statements, and impounded all vehicles involved pending mechanical inspection and further investigations.

The body of the deceased was conveyed to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.

Saiga urged all road users, especially motorists and boda boda riders, to exercise caution and observe traffic regulations to reduce accidents on the roads.

“We urge road users to avoid reckless maneuvers, especially at junctions, and to always prioritize safety while using the roads,” he said.

The latest crash adds to growing concerns over increasing road accidents in the Teso sub-region, where reckless riding, speeding, and dangerous overtaking continue to claim lives.
